SML didn’t just change my life - it saved my life. If rock bottom has a basement, I was drowning in the basement when I arrived at SML. The past 26 years of denying my mental health struggles and the subsequent impacts on my life had caught up to me. At the age of 38 I found myself barely able to tread water with two choices in front of me. One, I could start swimming and give life a second chance, or two, I could stop treading water and give up on life altogether. Enter SML. Full disclosure, it wasn’t exactly my choice to seek residential treatment, but I begrudgingly went. Initially terrified, I soon found myself relieved to be in a supportive, judgement-free environment where I could learn to be vulnerable and start to heal. From a treatment perspective, both the clinical and support staff were extremely knowledgeable and genuinely cared about the well-being of each client. The programming was well designed and balanced group/individual psychotherapy with other forms of therapy such as art and recreation. Overall, SML is situated to provide a unique treatment experience that meets each client wherever they may be in their recovery. Other benefits included a peaceful setting, daily wellness walks, movie nights, and a one of a kind culinary team. My time at SML wasn’t always easy, nor was SML perfect, but overall if you are willing to put in the work, then the experience will be absolutely worth it. Coming out the other side, I now have a greater understanding of my mental health, its triggers, and a plethora of coping skills I can leverage as I continue my recovery journey. I’ve also made friends that I will carry with me going forward, and found a continued support network through the amazing alumni program. Looking at where I started and where I am today, I can honestly say that going through with treatment at SML was the best decision I ever made. If you think you could benefit from SML, please don't hesitate to seek treatment. You deserve to receive the hope, support, and care that you need in a safe environment. You are worth it.
